Degree os difficulty: Moderate (easy to covered bridge and back)
Estimate Time: 1½  Hours
Suggested Bike: Mountain
Route: take a left onto Rt. 44W and ride through Brownsville.  Continue a few miles down the road until Matteson Real Estate is on your left.  Take that left onto Ascutney Basin Road and cross the covered bridge.  (For an easier ride, turn around & return to Ascutney.)  If you continue, Clay Gates Farm will be on your right.  Use your brakes as you ride down the dirt road.  At the stop sign at the end of the road, take a right onto Rt. 106N.  Follow through the village of Reading ( While in Reading, for a pit-stop, cross the bridge and take immediate left.  Claude Bartley Field will be on the left.  Hike up the hill for a rest at the field or waterfall.)  Continue down the road and take a right, then a left at the stop sign past Reading Country Store.  Follow up the hill and take a right on to Rt. 44E.  The remaining distance is “all downhill” as you follow Rt. 44E until you reach Ascutney Mountain Resort on your right.

Around the Mountain
Distance: 25 miles
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate (one long climb)
Estimated time: 1 ½ - 2 hours
Suggested Bike: Road
Route: Take a left out on the Resort onto Route 44W through Brownsville and on through mostly flat terrain for five miles until you reach Route 106.  Turn left and continue for five miles through gradual downhill terrain (you can easily sustain high speed through this section) until you reach the junction os Route 131E.  There will be a blinking yellow light.  (Note that there is a very tempting Dairy Bar at this crossroads that may deserve your attention.)  Turn left and continue for a few miles until you begin a two mile ascent that is fairly rigorous.  When you reach the crest, the four mile descent flies you to the junction of Route 5N.  Turn left and continue one mile to Route 44A on left.  There is a gradual three mile rise as you pass over I-91 and continue to Route 44W.  Turn left for a scenic two mile return to Ascutney that is gradual uphill climb, but not difficult.  You’ve done it...completely circled Mount Ascutney!
